Are bloggers entrepreneurs?
Entrepreneurship is described by the Oxford learner’s dictionary as …
The activity of setting up a business or businesses, taking on financial risks in the hope of profit.
But, the question arises whether or not bloggers are seen as entrepreneurs or not.
Are bloggers entrepreneurs?
As blogs are, most often only websites containing content, the debate has raised as to whether bloggers are classified as entrepreneurs or not.
Society has changed enough to allow many creatives to channel their energies and passions into online content that help them to derive a continuous income.
And so, whilst it may seem unlikely to some, there are many similarities to starting a blog as to starting a new business.
To determine if a blogger is indeed an entrepreneur, we need to first understand the roles of entrepreneurs and those of bloggers.
Blogger vs entrepreneur
An entrepreneur is an innovator who founds and runs a business, assuming all risks and rewards of the business.
A blogger is a creative who founds and runs a blog, assuming all risks and rewards of the blog.
How are a blog and a start-up similar?
Although there is a clear distinction between a blog and a start-up business venture, the way a blog is run is no different to that of a start-up business.
A blogger invests their resources into researching and reading material that is relevant to keep readers coming back to their blogs.
Just like a start-up business, it is uncertain if the blog will succeed or not.
In both cases, there is an input, process, and output.
The input for both the entrepreneur and the blogger is time and money.
Although the process may differ, the output remains the same for both bloggers and entrepreneurs. Both are trying to achieve brand recognition, continued growth and revenue.
Are all bloggers then entrepreneurs?
Whilst we can determine that blogging can certainly be classified as an entrepreneurial venture, not all bloggers will focus on running their blogs as a business.
Hobby bloggers, who blog on anything and everything and often host on free sites like WordPress.com and blogger, are not likely to take their blogs to a professional level.
For the professional blogger, who has registered their custom domain name and formed a strategy to maximize a revenue stream on their blogs, their content is often their product.
Others may supplement income by joining affiliates, selling ad space or running a shop on their blog website.
So, yes, bloggers who have taken up blogging professionally are entrepreneurs.
What skills do bloggers and entrepreneurs need?
For both entrepreneurs and bloggers to be successful, they will need to focus on working hard, adept marketing skills, time management, efficient admin skills, and networking.
Bloggers will also need to, directly or indirectly, source content and thus the success of a blog falls directly on the amount of effort a blogger puts back into their blog.
Conclusion
Blogging can often seem like a realistic choice as a full-time career but in the words of Pedram Zohrevand….
Spend time to hone your skills and mind. You will thank yourself for this in the long run.
With the right mindset, dedication, and consistency you can build your blog as a successful brand.
